Mahindra World City Chennai Is India's First Gold Certified Integrated Business City

Certification awarded by Indian Green Building Council

30, July 2014

Mahindra Lifespace Developers Limited the real estate and infrastructure development business of the $16.5 billion Mahindra Group, announced that Mahindra World City, its integrated city in Chennai, has been India's first township to be awarded with Stage I certification under IGBC Green Townships. The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) is a part of the CII-Godrej Green Business Centre which is actively involved in promoting the Green Building movement in India.

"This certification is a validation of our vision to promote sustainable urbanization by decongesting existing cities and offering the right balance between life, living and livelihood. It is particularly meaningful for a large integrated city covering more than 1500 acres of land since we had to ensure that green principles were followed across, including the industrial, residential, social and infrastructure aspects at Mahindra World City, Chennai", said Ms. Sangeeta Prasad, Chief Executive Officer, Integrated Cities and Industrial Clusters, Mahindra Lifespace Developers Limited.

Mahindra World City, Chennai, is the first township to be awarded with Stage I certification under IGBC Green Townships. It was evaluated on four environmental categories as defined by IGBC which included - Site Selection and Planning, Land Use Planning, Transportation Planning and Infrastructure Resource Management and Innovation in Design & Technology.

MWC, Chennai is a city of many firsts in the journey of sustainability. It has been a pioneer in commissioning an Off-grid solar power plant in the State of Tamil Nadu. Located in The Canopy, the 75 kw Off Grid - Solar power plant, has the capacity to generate 1,16,000 units of clean electrical energy annually, offsetting almost 60 tons of CO2.

The landscaped area of MWC Chennai has used the philosophy of Xeriscaping by planting native plant species which do not consume too much water and are drought resistant. A huge centralized Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) with 2MGD capacity and a Tertiary treatment plant (TTP) with 1MGD capacity capable of treating water with raw domestic sewage characteristics have been installed to cater to all participants within the city.

Rainwater harvesting facilities for the park and recharge pits to collect rain water are imperatives within the city with the companies within Mahindra World City having rainwater harvesting facilities within their campuses. A network of storm water drains has been constructed along all the roads and the entire run-off water from surrounding water bodies and excess rain is conveyed through the storm water drains into the Kolavai Lake.

In addition, Mahindra World City, Jaipur has been awarded with Gold Rating of SEZ Pre-certification under IGBC Green SEZ. With this Mahindra World City Jaipur becomes the first Pre-certified SEZ in the country.

Located in Rajasthan - a water scarce state - MWC Jaipur is working actively in the area of water conservation. The township meets 65-70% of its long term water requirement through recycled water. The water recycling initiative in MWC Jaipur h a s helped decrease the d i v e r s i o n of water from sensitive eco-systems, reduced wastewater discharges and mitigated pollution. More importantly, it has resulted in the average water table levels rising in and around the MWC Jaipur core area.
